Dosing and Administration
Dosing
- Vaprisol is indicated for intravenous (IV) use in hospitalized patients only
- Therapy should begin with the administration of a loading dose of Vaprisol 20 mg IV as a 30-minute infusion, followed by a 20-mg continuous infusion administered over 24 hours
- Vaprisol should be administered intravenously for an additional 1 to 3 days as a continuous infusion of 20 mg/day; the total duration of Vaprisol (after loading dose) should not exceed 4 days
- Vaprisol may be titrated up to a maximum dose of 40 mg daily if serum sodium concentration is not rising at the desired rate
Administration and monitoring
- Serum sodium, volume, and neurological status must be carefully monitored
- Limit rise in serum sodium to <12 mEq/L/24 h
- In patients whose serum sodium rises undesirably rapidly, Vaprisol should be discontinued and serum sodium concentration and neurological status carefully monitored; if serum sodium continues to rise, Vaprisol should not be resumed
- Administer Vaprisol through large veins, and change the infusion site every 24 hours to minimize the risk of vascular irritation
